Help with hair!

Post by Metina on Sun Jul 19, 2009 8:17 am

Hiya,

I am looking for help with doing horse like hair. I do a rodeo and get asked for a lot of horses. I use a version of Christina Davidson's horse and do it all pretty well until I need to add the mane and hair coming from between its ears. It looks horrible.

Any suggestions?

Are you looking for more realistic hair, or more "cartoon" hair?

It is hard to describe and I just can't post a pic as I am too embarrassed! I guess just like hair if you were drawing a person. I am tempted to take the way the Wolfe Brothers do the mane from their unicorn rainbow thingie instead of wisps of hair, but I would like to figure this out.

It does and thanks. It is another method of doing horse hair. Her horse is in the Illustions and Friends book. I can't post it for copyright reasons. I am trying to find another example to post since I now realize I didn't give much to go on.

Unfortunately no. She did a half face version on page 48 of the Illusions step by step. This is the one I am going for.

I went and looked in the book (could have done that to start with I suppose) She's just roughly dragged her brush from the root out with out forcing the finish which gives it the rough look

I have that book and know what you mean Matina. It's like the horse she has in her calendar....

Personally, I like doing the hair like Shannon, unless I was spending alot of time doing a one on one paint session for something really special.

I love that unicorn Shannon! I uploaded your picture to use someday...still waiting for a girl that want's 'da bomb' unicorn!! Very Happy

Thanks. It's a very popular design... butterflies still rule, of course, but it appeals to the horse lovers.

Shannon, that unicorn is beautiful...i've always had a problem with horses--can't seem to get the nose right.
