FX products that can be stitched...

Hi kids...
So earlier this summer I took a Horror FX class with the Wolfe bros. and they did a demo using silicone where they built up two lines of it and then took a needle and thread and stitched thru it. It was AWESOME... as you can see...



My question is, can I replicate this with other products? I tried the other night using the Mehron 3D gel, but I couldn't get it to harden enough so the thread didn't tear right thru. It was the first time I played with this product so I don't know if I missed a step somewhere, but after 10 minutes the stuff was still pretty gooey. I want to do this trick on my fiancee and I for halloween but before I spend $20 + on the product and shipping I was wondering if maybe the Gel would work if I knew how to use it properly.

Any tips or tricks for me or should I just pony up the $ for the real deal?

I just tried it with Gelatin, and with Sorbitol based gelatine - it pulls through - I don't have the Mehron gel, but it might be similar. Watermelon didn't pull through - I wonder if you could surface with latex? or even eyelash glue?

I would pre-make it with latex, do the sewing, then attach it...

mehron 3-d gel or even the wax would probably work. I just got some in the mail. Maybe in between parties this weekend i'll give it a go.

Hey Changing... when you play with it let me know how the 3D gel sets for you... I used it for the first time and after 10 minutes it still wasn't set and firm yet. I'm nto sure how long it usually takes but if you have better luck let me know.

Shannon... Good idea, I'll try that next. Maybe taking some cotton or tissue paper and pre coating it with latex would work... it should be solid enough so the thread doesn't pull thru it. And it would be easier to stitch something BEFORE I adhere it to my head rather than trying to do it in the mirror and stabbing myself in the head!

That's so... gross! But amazing! I need to get myself some liquid latex, I'm using ben nye scar wax for most of my FX work but it melts so easily! Any tips?

Do you know what type of silicone they were using?
