Looking to book an airshow
I thought I would try and jump in feet first in our new area, and contacted the organizer for an airshow.
The airshow is at the end of the month, Oct. 29 and 30.
The organizer said they tried having a face painter out a few years ago and the line for people was over an hour long, so IF they have me out I have to bring at least three face painters AND a cashier.
The cashier would have to track each transaction so I can report how many transactions occurred. They would have me sign a vendor agreement and all vendors have to track and report.
I don't know anyone here, tried reaching out to other face painters and only one responded to me. I could try calling and saying "hey, huge PPF event, would you like to join me?"
But I am hesitant since I don't know them personally. When I have had to do that in the past, it was always painters I already knew and was comfortable with.
And I am not even sure how to work out the cashier angle.......
How would you handle this? Or would you say too many hoops for possibly not enough return?
I was told they expect over 100,000 for each day of the airshow.

Re: Looking to book an airshow
I did an airshow recently, and it was a HUGE success! I was the only one painting, tho. My hubby was the cashier/line control, and I donated 30% to the charities benefitting from the airshow. (total, not each...)
I would definitely go for it! Put a line out there on the "jobs available" thread here, and see if you can get a few folks who are on target with your skill level, and willing to work for you.
Definitely discuss split, and PUT IT IN WRITING before the gig.
Cashier just needs to be someone taking money, so you and the other painters can concentrate on painting. Guess the airshow must have been annoyed by the last painter not painting fast enough.
One more thing. I realized too late that I was significantly undercharging. I saw some advice on here that you should base your PPF rates off of what people are paying for water and beer. If I had known that folks were paying $4 a bottle of water, I'd have charged more than $5 per face, for sure! My line was too long, and any pro on here will tell you that the answer to that problem is raising prices. But you can't do that mid-line, lol!

Re: Looking to book an airshow
Hey Liz,
Not sure where you are at in TX, but I'm doing the airshow in El Paso on the 22-23. I'm pretty sure it will be a success. Last year, there were 70,000 in attendance.
If you're close enough, I might consider coming out to help. I had to reach out to another artist to book mine as well. I'm nervous about it, but I just can't turn down such an awesome opportunity!

Re: Looking to book an airshow
Whitney, I am right outside of San Antonio. The airshow is at Randolph AFB. I think you are about five or six hours away.
Re: Looking to book an airshow
Good luck let us know how it went. They have air shows around here and I never thought of them for face painting. Do you do planes and copters ?
Re: Looking to book an airshow
The only thing I do currently is a silhouette of a helicopter, but I know inspiration and ideas are out there!
Clayton (Marvelous Masks) had a lot of great designs he did for a Travel Expo, I think?
Hmmm....was running the whole idea by my husband. I had thought he could be the cashier but no. He will be traveling that weekend. He is Army and gone about half of every month. Ugh.
We did share some ideas about keeping track of sales though.
He thinks I should call the organizer and see why they want to sign me on as a vendor (as opposed to entertainment) and why they want all sales tracked, of course I didn't think of those things when I was on the phone with her.
He also thinks this may be a bit much to tackle being that we just moved here and I don't know anyone, so any help I bring on would be blind trust. Hmmm.....more to think about.

Re: Looking to book an airshow
I found a nanny and a place to stay and te hubby approves. If you need me, I'm in! My airshow wanted 25% but I negotiated 15%. I think I might have been able to get 12% of I would have pushed harder.
Re: Looking to book an airshow
Last year I worked the Pensacola Homecoming airshow in the State Farm tent. It was WAY awesome. They haven't called this year (booked through my partner who did not keep the contact!
) So I checked the price for a vender--- YIKES!
Anyway- Since Pensacola IS the home of the Blue Angels, it is only right that I have an awesome Jet to offer (complete with jet thrusters!) It's evolved since this photo, but the boys just love it.

Re: Looking to book an airshow
If you are doing glitter tattoos. Linda Adams did some custom made ones for the air show I did. Fighters, bombers, helicopters etc.
Re: Looking to book an airshow
Thank you Whitney!
I just posed a whole list of questions to the organizer, so I will be able to determine my direction better once I hear back from her.
You guys are the best.

Re: Looking to book an airshow
I did an airshow a few years ago up here... they hired me at my dayrate. And the line was long... and it was so cold on July 23rd that people were wearing snowsuits... and we were given volunteer passes so we were able to eat and drink for free at the vendors.
Re: Looking to book an airshow
Around here, the vendor booths are sold for $1500 and no one get's paid or is able to be there for free. Working out a percentage is actually a rarity. Linda wanted to do the one in Jacksonville and they would not budge on their $1500 booth fee. That's why if you find an airshow who will negotiate, go for it! There are only 2 that are run by civilian companies so all the others follow along the military policies and procedures which do not allow for negotiating the $1500 booth fee. If you get lucky and find someone willing to work things out, you should look into it.
Re: Looking to book an airshow
Holy vendor fee, Batman!
$1500!!!!!!!!??????????
I thought 30% was high, but I was willing, just for the opportunity. Got great exposure, made great contacts, have had quite a bit of repeat business from it.
Here is the stencil design I used for the airshow.

Pay no attention to the chubby canvas.

I love that stencil design!
Still trying to find a third painter. I have someone who may be able to do one day, but that leaves me to find someone to fill in the other part.
Did find a cashier/line manager......my brother in Fort Worth area. I hope to train him to face paint sometime soon actually, he's a fantastic artist.
