I Made 5 Birthday cakes in one fell swoop

Post by CreateFaces on Mon Oct 31, 2011 7:15 pm

So, since my father passed away a month ago, many sad things have happened and I won't go into detail. Suffice it to say my older sister has not been emotionally equipped to handle the planning of birthday parties for her 3 kids. My kids' birthdays are in late October and early November so I suggested to my sister that I would host one huge Halloween birthday bash for all 5 kids.

I baked 5 cakes on Thursday night, up til 2am, got them all crumb-coated. My plan was to cover all of them in fondant and decorate. Got home from my regular 9to5 on Friday and got to work decorating. Made homemade fondant and modeling chocolate for the first time (do not suggest it for the faint of heart.)

My daughter wanted a Michael Jackson Thriller cake, my son a Sugar Skull, Nephew #1 a Sponge Bob, #2 a Justin Bieber and Niece a Princess cake. With time running out, only the first Sugar Skull cake got fondant covering the rest only got the crumb coat.

Worked til 4am went to sleep, woke up at 9 on Saturday and finished the last cake 15 minutes before the guests arrived.

Even though the cakes ended up messy, I'm was so proud to get them all finished and each kid didn't notice the messy frosting and awful piping work they were thrilled to each get their own cake Very Happy

It was very kind and nice from you for helping your sister with the party, and you did a GREAT work! I love them all but my fav is the sugar skull, looks very professional and detailed. And the Michael Jackson one is sooo cool, too! (Btw how did you do the Justin B. pic? Did you paint it?). I bet they were all very happy with their cakes! I love you

Yes, the Sugar Skull was the first cake decorated. I wanted to make more decoration, but I soon realized I was running out of time Shocked so I left out extra detail and rushed to work on the others.

I painted the Justin Bieber on rice paper (spring roll sheets) with black food coloring.

The Sugar skull was white chocolate and I used my face paints to paint it because the food coloring was not bright enough Razz I told my son do not eat it.

Thanks! I'm thinking I want to take a course to learn some technique since I make all the cakes for the kids every year..... BUT, I know I'll NEVER commit to 5 all at once EVER again because this is what I felt like at the last minute -----> affraid
I kept thinking that if Shannon didn't live in the Great White North, I would have begged her help (maybe even offered me soul Twisted Evil )

Kristal thanks.
The face John has in my avatar was the face I was doing a SBS for for the forum contest. Right when I got done taking the SBS pics I got a call from my step mother that I needed to be at the hospital. Then, everything fell apart. I've been immersing myself in art as a coping mechanism. I haven't drawn or sculpted as much as I have been lately since high school.
It has saved my sanity and I've started to feel "normal" finally this past week.

Tamara, thank you. I thought I would be seeing you soon at Fabbulas Crying or Very sad I was really looking forward to it this year because I decided last minute after my father passed to bring my son for his birthday, then I found out that it wasn't happening. I'm trying to find and plan the next one that fits our schedule.

L!zzie, thank you for the kind words.

Cheryl, so sorry about your dad. When mine passed I almost quit face painting I felt so overwhelmed.
Those cakes are awesome & such a gift! I know they'll always remember what you did for them in a rough season. Family is awesome!
