It's funny what we're capable of when circumstances call for it.

I'm not usually the organizer of the family, my older sister has always held that role and my younger brother, younger sister and I always look to HER to take charge, organize all the details and get family stuff accomplished.

It really affected me not only to see her in such a lost state, but that she allowed me to "take over" without any argument. That made me snap right into action.

From the wake and funeral details to the planning of party stuff. It's like God put me into "auto-pilot" and allowed me to get everything done without becoming overwhelmed or trying to overthink anything.

Though my heart is still breaking for my sister, I am grateful for the experience because it helped me to heal (Even while planning wake details, I kept chuckling at certain times imagining what my father would have been saying if he were watching me.) It also helped me realize that I should help my big sis out more and not allow her to do everything all the time.

Thanks for the kind support ladies, this is why I love THIS forum SOOOO much. I can really feel the positive energy coming at me and it helps. You all rock so hard!

He was watching you, and was pretty proud...Make sure you take some down time. We can "snap to" when needed--I laughed so much at my son's funeral...but also take the down time that heals the wound.

If you can find it, there is a very old book called "Intra Muros" by Rebecca Springer that is a beautiful read for times like these. I always end up giving my copy away, but I may have an e-file of if if you pm me.

I'm sure your dad is proud of you for taking on this huge responsibility for your family. You did wonderful work- esp with the little bit of time to do it in. I'm sure the children will never forget this party! Keep up the good work, but take care of yourself too! I know us "giving souls' have a tendency to run ourselves into the ground while doing for others. maybe you should treat yourself to a nice spa day!

so sorry to hear of your fathers passing. Sending thoughts and prayers your way.

You are an incredible sister, aunt, and mother. You really outdid yourself on those cakes and every single child looks ecstatic! You really brought some light into a not so bright time in your families life.

Sorry to here about you dad. and I am sure he would be very happy with your efforts for the family.
here is a tip, for next year Look into somthing called gumpaste, flowerpaste, modelling paste has many names. you can make figures up to 12 months in advance with this. just store them in a plastic container with the food type silica gel (i get them out of taco, burrito packets)
if you find that the gumpaste is too hard to work with mix it 50/50 with the fondant you can store them for about 2 to 3 months
that way you can basically slap them on - I always have some spare figures and flowers. around the house.

Good effort!!! looks like the kids are happy.I suspect you will be eating cake for sometime!

Cheryl, sorry to hear about your dad, and everyone is right about how much your family will remember all of your hard work forEVER. I remember when my brother died my siblings and I all jumped into action to make a memory board for the wall at his memorial service, and a DVD with pictures and music to be played at the funeral...it was such a great bonding experience and I had never felt so close to my family. Isn't it funny how we can just kind of kick into gear and get things done when they need to be done!? You did a wonderful job on those cakes cheers!
Oh, and I have a book to recommend too, it's called Tear Soup and it's good for everyone including children. I was given a copy after my brother died, and I recommend it to anyone who's endured a recent loss.
