Anyone ever done murals??

Post by Criss on Mon Aug 17, 2009 1:03 am

I have done murals & windows before, but I never knew how to charge properly. Anyone have any experience with this area?

Not charging. I painted a mural in our bathroom once - one-stroke sunflowers around the shower enclosure.

I have done one. I didn't know what to charge either, it was for the business I work for and I just said supply the paint and give my my hourly wage. I got the bid Razz

here's a link to a picture of it.

I painted a mural in my own room... a fantasy scene on my double-door closet (the closet itself is pitifully small! ) Two trees as the border, rolling green hills in front of a blue sky, a castle and a dragon Very Happy I'm not sure what I'd charge either though...

I would charge whatever makes you comfortable. It is hard to set an amount, it depends on detail and time and color....wording definitely adds more because it takes so long. I did one recently, about 8x7 (didn't cover the whole area)..I charged 250 for a friend. If it had been a stranger I would of charged 550. It only took two colors.

The mural she wanted was from this poster

But the words where placed else where and much bigger. I will try to get an image up.

Funny this thread exists because my lurker friend here got offered a window painting gig and doesn't know what to charge either. I too came on here wondering about it...I think like face painting, it's worth checking out what charges other window painters in the region are charging..also consider a per hour charge...if you're not sure how long it takes you to complete the project, consider what you feel you're worth per hour for painting services...5 an hour? 10 an hour? etc... you might be the pioneer on this forum for price estimates! Do tell what your experiences are!

I've only painted one mural on a High School dugout and only charged $100.... once I was done I felt I should have charge more cause it turned out to be ALOT of work. More then I thought when I started it. I didn't know what to charge either so live and learn . Rolling Eyes

This was a few years back and since then we've made friends with this airbrush/painter guy who lives up in L.A. and does murals besides alot of other things... anyway we got to talking about pricing and he told me I should be charging $30 per square foot. Hes been doing painting and airbrushing for years & years so I think he knows what hes talking about.
You could always surf the net and find other people who do murals and ask or maybe pricing may already be listed on thier site just so you get an idea..

I painted two 'murals' on two huge rocks. They were the silouette of a friend doing a sliding stop on her reining horse. The rocks/boulders appeared to look flat and smooth until I started working.. what a pain in the .....it took be about 3 days to do these two pictures. Of course with it being a picture of my friend and her horse, she was very particular that it looked EXACTLY like them....boy does she have an eye for detail. They turned out very nice and she was forever grateful but I haven't done anything like that since.

PS I didn't charge her a dime, but she's repaid me in many different ways since then.
