New Gig at Sunday Markets BUT then.....

Post by Fun Frog on Mon Dec 05, 2011 8:32 am

After weeks of walking through a local market I realized that they had no FP. I sent in my application (yes you have to be approved and show what you will be selling, incl $$), received my approval and finallly found a weekend free. When I arrived to sign in guess what I saw... another FP. Shocked It was also her first day here. At least her prices were the same as mine. The day was very slow but I did come out infront, covering costs with a small profit to boot. The question is do I keep coming to these markets, is it going to be able to support 2 painters every week? Should I ask her if we could do alternate weeks? What do you suggest I use to attract customers to my tent? Or do I just look elsewhere for another market?
Thanks for your input as alsways.

Hmm. If its not a big enough market to support 2 painters then ask her if ahe wants to alternate weekends? That way you have the other weekends open for gigs Wink

What pinkundies said...actually if it were me I'd love that arrangement...Having everyother weekend open for gigs as well as just a weekend off now and then...sounds perfect...make sure that arrangement is ok with the market though...

I would definitely try to come to some arrangement for different weeks and try to stay on good terms with the other painter... maybe make a new friend for referrals and it could work out better for everyone. Weird though that they would think it was ok to have two of that kind of vendor... yes you can have more than one person selling tomatoes, but face painting?

Ugh!! That is so frustrating!! I HATE competing with nearby painters. It just makes everyone feel crappy, especially if you don't stay busy. You want to be friends and have a good relationship, but it's hard when it's your bread and butter. Chances are she was frustrated too. I bet she would consider it.

I gave up on Farmer's Markets a while back. In my area, they just don't do well. Everyone wanted a deal or to be taught. One lady actually whinnnnned, "But I REALLLLY want to learn!" How embarrassing.... I prefer birthday parties, events or large PPF festivals.

We did a local market this last fall but it wasn't very good at all. Most people just came for the tomatoes and fried pies, but the Mayor asked us to participate and it's a 3pm to 8pm thing on Saturdays. If we go back next year we're bringing other stuff to sell and then it will only be $10 for the market space and $12 for the venders license.

HillbillyDiva1,
I think you're on to the right track. Most people at these markets have never seen a FP there before so were not prepared for it. Maybe next week they will be more aware of us FP. My 3x3 meter stall cost AU$44 as a casual (maybe I will change to regular it's AU$33 and we don't need 'vendors licences' but do require to have Public Lib. Ins. here is Oz. Our markets start setup @ 7am, and trade from 9am - 4pm, it's a big day!! Sleep

I've been doing a local farmers' market here for 3 years now.... There are SOME great days, but most make me very little money. The good side though is that I have a following of regulars now that will come find me wherever I am. Every single one of the market regulars and vendors would come to me if they ever needed a clown. And since the market has some connections to city run events, I now have connections in those areas too.... Also, the market has been in the local media quite a bit the last few years, so I've been mentioned in the paper and on the local news channel a few times just because I'm there.

You have to weigh the pros and cons of your particular market. Ours is currently being forced to move to a new location and while I'm willing to TRY the new location (if they ever pick one before next June) I don't know if I can commit to (almost) every weekend like I have been doing. I don't know how the move will affect the market and I'm already barely doing more than breaking even cash-wise there and considering it a win in establishing a consistent client-base and getting some publicity.
