Nutcracker prince and Rat King trial run before run date - HELP!

Post by Mehndi Masala on Mon Dec 05, 2011 4:44 pm

OK ....dry run at the prince...like the body....may do some changes on the arms. this is an 'urban' version, so the Rat king is basically a 'biker' rat but I want the prince to stay...well....princely. Handsome...I need to see if anyone has suggestions for his face. I was going to to teeth that span the lines I put down, then thought the teeth would be unattractive. The 'rouge' on the cheeks in circles somehow seemed too cute and traditional.

Here is the ratking face. Turns out they have rat ears, so the ones on the face won't be neccessary. Is he 'ratty' enough? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! ESPECIALLY for the snarling nose part....

Thanks guys!!!

OH MY HECK!!!! That rat face is amazing. SERIOUSLY... so awesome! Bravo! I love the prince's paint! he looks awesome. because he is a nuttcracker, you might want to do something more to his face. He kinda looks like a ventriliquists dummy right now. One thing that nuttcrackers always seem to have is a mustache... and pretty thick eyebrows too. Maybe you can make the eyebrows actually be black (go to a point at the top). Also.. with the lines around the mouth I would shade a little bit more. But seriously... NICE WORK!!

I found this picture and thought the little cleft in the chin was cool... and what they did with the eyebrows.

I LOVE it.
I too feel the nut cracker chin needs something. I think if you color in the chin/cracker thing that will help.

For the rat, snarl lines across the nose, extra crease lines from the corner of the eyes (closest to the nose area) & perhaps emphasize (sp?) the outer edge of the nose. I'm sure you get what I mean, as you are such an incredible talent. I totally agree about a mustache for the nutcracker.

They'll be so thrilled they hired you to do the painting, your outcome will be brilliant. Very Happy

I agree that the dimple on the chin may be thw way to go but I'm not sold on the moustache. A real nutcracker has one, but the nutcracker prince in all the ballets and movies is clean shaven and I really want to keep him handsome. Where the mounth line is I almost put in the teeth for a nutcracker, but didn't want to mar his face. BUT I love the cleft chin and maybe getting his eyebrows darker. With the 'Urban' feel of the shoot, I'm thinking that 'man-liner' is the way to go...but not too sure exactly 'where to go' yet.

Real rats are nice, but the Rat King is a nasty piece of work in the play, that's why he has nasty pointy teeth.

@Mandi - I do know what you mean about highlighting the nostril in the rat like a Wolfe Bros. monster face which would look great for the angry BUT that would take away from the fact his nose/snout has to be long and skinny...rat like. This is where my issue is coming in. *sigh* I can let the designs mostly fly as is.....but I just want......more???

I SO appreciate the suggestions! Definately will be hoping for more!

@jolenebox - Yeah....Aj is a very sweet guy....aaaaaand has no problem meeting girls....Aaaaaaand he's a bartender.......aaaaaaand he likes to be painted! Probably one of my fav male models!

Wonderful as always and the rat is awesome.

My only suggestion is the line for the nutcracker's mouth. You are taking it out to the sides before going down... I think it looks more like a nutcracker when the lines go straight down at the corners of the mouth... like a real one as the mechanism is rectangular. I agree with you about the teeth.

Totally awesome work! I was thinking the same as Shannon about the mouth. I just did a Marionette doll like that for Babes in Toyland and I put some shading on the inside as well. The only problem was that she looked "mean" or "angry" from stage so I had to add a bit of a painted on smile.

Kim, I'm lovin' them both.

Suggestions(from a Nutcracker Mamma:-)

For the Nutcracker Prince, it really depends on if you want to paint him, when he's the handsome prince after the curse is broken or if you want to paint him as the Nutcracker. The Nutcracker is supposed to look a little creepy, so the teeth would be ok. You could do a half & half... half the face as the Nutcracker & half the face as the prince...

For the rat, I love it & think you nailed it perfectly. My one suggestion would be to move the white part in the middle of the eye higher so it doesn't crease as the night goes on. Also, paint it before the red & not over it(this way it'll be bolder & not pink up.
What if you moved the nose to the lower lip & the teeth to the chin(taking advantage of the long face)? It might work & make the image just distorted enough to be even creepier...
