I got a gig! but the weather will be a factor

Post by shandi on Fri Dec 09, 2011 10:31 am

I'm working a gig for a parade and festival tomorrow, high is 53 low is 40..these are Texans and they don't deal well with cold. I not only am facing weather issues I am going to be set up on a rodeo dirt floor...so any suggestions? Hubby was hoping to hit up the carpet place near his work and see if they had any scraps they'd give , I'm going to get a tarp to peg down as a floor. We will be dealing with dust. I can usually sell my face painting no matter what, the vendors fee is small so I think we will drop everything on the board to 5.00. Hubby doing tatts may be another story. Means kids will have to take off their jackets or he will be doing allot of hands. We need the income something fierce, things will get better I have faith! I know this gig was opened to us by God's Favor and we will do okay. Just concerned about setting up on loose dirt....
Do you think a watering can would help?

I painted at a 3 day rodeo this past spring. I was positioned to the left of the arena opening where the horses, etc enter the arena. You spraying water won't help much because that only controls your immediate area, and the majority of the dust I encountered was kicked up by the wind and galloping horses. Even though the organizers of the rodeo periodically sprayed water to try and control the dust, it was warm enough to dry out fast and the first wind gust (arena was under a huge permanent canopy) the dust was still everywhere. I kept the lids on my paint and the laptop boxes closed until I needed it. It took longer that way, but after the first dust storm and then trying to get my paints clean, I kept the laptop cases closed. Next year, I'll definitely put my tent and my SIDES up to block against the dust. ANY kind of wind block will help. If you don't have to deal with the wind, then I would try the water spritzing and the carpeted area.

As far as lowering your prices to make up for a low entry fee, I wouldn't! I'd have some available in all the price ranges! I painted more full-faces that weekend than I did the simpler ones.

Good luck! Let us know how it went!
