Well, I know that for me, the challenge of approaching clusters of painters I don't know is fear of being discovered to be a fraud. I've always felt that way; as if I have no business trying to jam or teach since I don't feel I'm that great of a painter. The only way to get past it is to 1) come with a group that you can always reconnect to should you run into some "mean girls", 2) strike out and talk to a member of the group when they inevitable wander off somewhere or just approach the whole group, or 3) go in and make a complete fool of yourself so that people will think you're the life of the party and either flock to you or avoid you like the plague. !

It's hard to know that people are wary of new painters because of all of the takers, but I don't doubt that the genuine painters will have no problem breaking through the trust barriers and finding a place. It's the ones who show up to a jam with a camera and nothing else that meet up with a brick wall.

Lady Jayde from the looks of your avatar your definitely not a fraud. There are ways to say your a good artist without sounding stuckup. I wouldn't make the top 100 in the world but I would make the top 5 in the 100 mile radius where I live. At Halloween we were at an event where we had another painter there and she said she wouldn't do devils or skulls for morel reasons. Guess who had the longer line. Whatever they ask for I figure out a way to paint it in face painting and at work with parasols when copyrights not involved. Better to try than fear it and not try.

I have to say I've been underwhelmed at jams myself. I attended FABAIC in 2004 in San Fransisco... I was all excited to go to a jam as I'd heard about how fab they were... walked into a huge room that had people in groups of two or three scattered widely around... that was it. I didn't know too many of them so I sat at a table by myself, and then someone I knew joined me and we just played and painted our arms and each other.

Pretty anticlimatic.

I attended a jam in the UK this past summer and that was an organized thing - everyone brought food, there were organized challenges and games, people wandered and poked around each other's kits to try things, Everyone had their kits set-up and were there to paint. Enjoyed that one immensely.
