"Borrowed Photos" and Interesting Judge Judy Episode ... Something to think about....
Check this out. While the case that was tried didn't pertain directly to face painting, the general gist of the way the law views photo rights and use can be applied to the face painting as well...maybe the light at the end of the tunnel ISN'T a train afterall...
On a recent episode of Judge Judy a bartending teacher at a bartending school took a bunch of photos of the school and the students. Then he opened his OWN school, and used those photos on his website, along with "testimonials" from the students about what a great teacher he was.
Judge Judy called it "misleading and outright THEFT." She said that even though HE took the photos, he was misleading potential students into thinking that was HIS school. So he lost! The plaintiff won $5,000 in damages!!
Since there's been a lot of discussion about how photos are being "borrowed" and the proper use of convention photos, I though that this could shed a little light on it from the judicial perspective. I've always held that while your right to take pictures of other's work at conventions or events is protected, HOW you use those pictures flirts with the ethics line quite a bit. Now I know that precidence has been set (even if it was Judge Judy) and the next time someone says "well, I took the pictures so I can do what I want with them" I know I have a legal leg to stand on. Just an FYI.

Good for Judge Judy! She cuts through all the BS.
I geuss I don't get one thing, what difference does it make where a picture is taken? If you did not paint the face or create the design, you should not claim that you did either one. Honesty is pretty cut and dried. Seems to me, anyway.
Wish I lived closer to Cleveland...would love to jam with you!

Great info. While having an inspiration folder of others work(weather from the Internet or photographed w/ your own camera) is fine, passing them off as your own work is definitely wrong. I'm not a big fan of these judge shows, but would love to see that one.

Well, I go to Columbus a lot during the early summer, maybe we can meet up! Are you planning on taking any classes if they're offered (usually in Hilliard through the Columbus Guild)? Conventions?
Re: "Borrowed Photos" and Interesting Judge Judy Episode ... Something to think about....
My one solace is the thought of some amateur painter trying to replicate the design from a stolen photo and failing miserably.

Lady Jayde, do you have contacts in the Columbus Guild? I found a Central Ohio guild on Snazaroo usa, tried to find the meeting place in Grove City but I think that place must have been closed...no restaruant by the name they listed...sent an email, it came back to me as undeliverable. I found another Central Ohio Guild just yesterday, may be the same one (?) but they meet at a differnet place downtown, on an different day, so I am going to try that in January and they returned my email. Is there a third, or are they all the same? Do you know them? I have not met any painters in person. I have only seen postings about classes on the form in Columbus after they were over
I am going to Kidvention in February! I am very ecxited to go to the workshops and meet up with some others from the forum!

Ottergirl.. I watched that exact thing happen recently. TRAGIC... but deserved.

That had to be tragic for the kid...did the painter learn a lesson?

I would contact either Margie McGuire or Robbie Hay. I'll pm you with their email addresses. I don't know how often they meet, but I do know, from talking to Margie, that they usually meet at one members home. They are a VERY talented bunch of ladies and Margie is sweeter than anything Willy Wonka can conjure up! You should definitely email her!

The spots are serously terrific... I don't have the body painting guts, so I really admire people who do.
I had a lady at the vampires ball pull her shirt way down for me to paint a flower on her breast, and I nearly fainted. Um....I am just not cut out for bodies. Maybe some day, but right now, faces are enough! I do love the effect, it looks cool, and I love the gold on white.
Thanks again for the contatcts...I hope to be jamming after the new year! Yeah!
