Thank you, Kumi! These are great! Just what I need to have an idea of what to do. I think these are good for quick designs as well, since some oriental designs are very intricate and would require a little more time. Thanks again!

Sounds like an interesting gig, I'm afraid I can't give you any of my own examples, but I know LisaJoyYoung did a cherry blossom design, and of course the koi fish mentioned.

Good luck!

Re: Quick Oriental designs?

Hey,
I painted in Hong Kong for 5 years and still get flown back there annually for gigs.

Re the symbols, DO make stencils, if there are any Asians at your event they get very insulted if you paint the strokes that make up a symbol in the wrong order - and its not always a logical (to us!) order.
But also watch out - most of the symbols I showed to local friends when we lived there were open to different interpretaions or even wrong! I ended up making my own stencils from things they drew/ corrected for me.

Look at the Chinese Zodiac animals - we had year of the rat, rabbit and tiger whilst we lived out there, I can't think what this spring will bring in, umm....
Anyway you have all those characters to do (all animals) as well as their symbols/ signs. I had a list of years with the animals that went with them; people could work out their animal if they didn't know it already and I'd do a 'bit' of that animal on them - ie tger stripes, snakeskin etc...

Also look up the folk art, they do gorgeous papel picado style paper cut out decorations at all the festivals.

Chinese New Year is always in red and gold. Fireworks/ fire crackers are big too. Little trees bearing small oranges/ satsumas are used as decorations - I did a lot of variations on cherry blossom designs with tiny oranges instead of flowers.
The tinsel/ lot of other decorations are the ancient-style round chinese coins with a square hole in the middle.

Loads of dragons (chinese dragons have 4 legs and nose pompoms)tho this was an extreme 1 on me:).
Also think pearls, as in the pearls of wisdom/ magic they often associate with. And those lovely curly clouds!

If you do go opera masks, I'd reduce it down to assymetric bits around eyes, the full face masks (which they all are) are tricky, VERY symmetrical and often not flattering - more a kids thing! Also some are bad luck if the character is evil.
what else did I learn..oh yeah pale colours mean death/ evil, I got loads of wee boys wanting pale pink butterflies to scare the girls with!

Blossom (sakura in Japanese but also big In China) is a spring thing but also used as a CNY decoration.

Cat x
