Luau party

Post by kathyrisley on Mon Dec 19, 2011 4:19 pm

Hi there, I am new to FP and new to the forum. I just started a little side business to FP just for parties and have my first "job" on Thursday night - a luau themed bday party for 10 nine year old girls. I've been researching and practicing designs and have looked all through the forum for inspiration. I painted this on my 3 year old - inspired by a sunset here on the forum, but I am unhappy with the way it ends at the top and looking for some suggestions for how to make it look "finished." I was afraid outlining it with black would look too harsh (and didn't get a chance to try bc she was ready to get up). Also I feel like it kind of just "sits" on the cheek and doesn't look like it flows with her face - not sure if that makes sense. Maybe it's because I love how masks always look formed to the face. Would love to figure out how to make this into a mask somehow...

Also working on some hibiscus flower designs but would love any other "luau" suggestions anyone else might like to offer or post. Thank you!!

Well I think u should be very proud of ur painting! I personally like it a lot! What I would do instead of tracing an outline, I would get a pearl white & blend it in with the pink & make It look finished by the edges...

Great photo!....and, cute design. I totally agree w/Tuli's suggestion of fading out with pearl white.

You could also blend purple up into the hair line, make it more of a half face. Balance with a few more birds and a dolphin. For a child with bangs, this design would be balanced.

I think is gorgeous! I also agree with blending the edges but not necessarily with the white, just with the same color but less amount.
Maybe adding a little pink on the other eye will make it all more complete (you could also add a little bird on the corner ). I still like it by itself though.
Great job and nice to meet you Wink

It's beautiful. I think you could just leave it like that.

If you do want to do a border of some sorts, the fading or white around the edges are great ideas, or you could do some kind of clouds (white with streaks of the sunset colours in them) at the top, or even border the design with some tropical flowers/dolphins jumping/fish and seashells, starfish etc.

lovely Smile

Have fun at the party!

You might want to do some abstract white or black line work to draw the eye up. Some swirls and tear drops. Could even pull the bottom of the island down with some more decorative line work.
Hibiscus are always a good idea, a ukulele maybe, a tiki, a volcano, a hulu dancer, dolphins, sharks, a shark tooth, tropical fish, pearl in a clam, surf board? Maybe a tiki design on it, tribal every thing, coconut drinks with little umbrellas, parrot, fire luau guy, or just fire-y designs, pineapples. I'm just rambling now.

You could also make the design into a more teardrop shape (it's already close!) by not going right to the edge of the face and tapering the bottom into a point. Then doing some abstract white teardrops and swirls around the shape to finish it off. I think that would look phenomenal! It looks awesome already though, love those vibrant colours! Wow!

I actually like it a lot! I think people will be happy to have your design on their face.
You could straighten the horizon line.

It's gorgeous. I think it's fabulous on it's own. One thing you were saying is that you didn't feel like it "flowed" around the face. Maybe you could take the palm trees up a little higher and have the palm leaves kinda frame the eye. Does that make sense?

Great ideas Kat and Linda, thank you. I have a few hours left before I leave for the party and I've been painting my leg like crazy practicing. My girls are totally over me painting them (not even a bribe of Christmas cookies has worked!). So I am hoping I can make the designs that are swirling in head come to life on these precious 10 year old girls tonight. Will probably need to invest in a practice face (do they make those in kid sized??).
: )

PS: I am giggling at the little snowflakes falling on the website. It makes me happy, especially since it's 79 degrees today in NC!
