PHOTOSHOPPING DESIGNS - Line Crossed?

Post by KaraMundy on Wed Dec 28, 2011 10:37 pm

I was browsing some local competition's website and when I checked out they're gallery I couldn't help, but notice that the painter photoshopped a lot. I don't mean photo editing or color correcting or tiny touch ups. I mean full on painted over it entirely in photoshop (very, very poorly). I'm not sure if it'd be rude to post the link here, but I feel kind of shamed as a face painter.

Ditto. Using PS to either hide bad work or to completely rework and cover what you have done is basically lying. Two schools of thought are 'buyer beware' and then they will be discovered when they are unable to duplicate the paintings that they have shown or that it's unethical trade practices.

I think lying to your clients is a big no-no.

I have photoshopped out backgrounds, but that is about it! OH and gotten rid of zits and whitened teeth of some models! LOL But not the paint!

Sounds bad though.

Wow! Never seen that before. Doesn't sound very pretty though.

I did recently, see some stolen pics on Etsy. I don't know if they are still there.

Well, basically ladies I searched Tampa face painters and clicked the "fancy-est" name on the first page. Haha.

But seriously, its kind of pathetic.

That's why I stay away from doing any of that stuff. My pics on my site and my boards are what you see is what you get. No room for misrepresentation of any kind. When I take my pics I try to take the best quality pics my knowledge and camera will allow me to take and don't get into all that other stuff. But that is just my take on it.

The only change I have ever done to a pic and this was just recently because I didn't know how to do it previously was to reverse an image so my writing would not appear backwards.

I looked at only one site & didn't see any photoshopped pics.

I think photo shopping a pic(like body painting) can be fun for your own personal stuff. Not that I've ever done it since I don't know how to:-)

But, I think it's misleading to overly photoshop your work that you're going to use for advertising. A little editing for redeye fixing, teeth whitening, etc is fine. I know the Snaz Contest rejects a photo if it's been edited in any way.

Ok, I found it. And I know what you mean. There are so many "photoshopped" designs (specially full faces): witch, puppy, cat,flames,..... The question is: if you can do it on the computer, why don't you do it on real faces? I told my hubby about it (I hadn't seen it before and I was amazed-sickened) and he answered me "Well, the screen always stands still". Clever boy... Rolling Eyes

(Linda, click on the FANCYest site and find the "Face and body designs" icon (at the top of the page).Click and take a look at the slideshow)

Uh... I'm pretty stunned. The photoshopping did NOTHING to improve the appearance of the designs other than to smear and/or make them appear out of focus... Makes one wonder WHY she bothered?? Maybe got Photoshop and wanted to practise???

lol. She needs a lesson in HOW to photoshop. Makes you wonder how it looked before if this is an improvement!! I will be the devil's advocate here and admit that I have cleaned up edges before.. maybe darkened a line where the paint got a little thin. "healed" a smudge mark from where the child may have touched the paint. I have created large printed vinyl banners and if I am going to have something blown up on a huge banner then I might touch up edges. Of course I don't photoshop the entire design or competely falsify the quality of my work. That would just be silly! If I didn't like something, I would repaint it. You would think....

I know I'm going to be thrashed for this, but I do some editing to my photos. I almost always adjust the white ballance and color corect a little. Sometimes I fix a smudge too. Like on this photo: I fixed up the spot on my daughters cheek where the bronze got a bit sloppy. Here is the before and after:

Now, I think that kind of editing is OK. And, after looking at that other lady's job I think I will pick up that little trick with the sparkles on the bling too- that's a good idea.

As far as the "fancy" photoshop though...I mean, I understand how she feels- how many times have you painted a design, looked at the picture later and said "I wish I would have..." >? But we're not talking about subtle changes here. I agree that re-drawing whole faces is over the line. What I can't understand is how this quality painter-who's photoshopped faces really can't be fooling anybody- is getting such sweet corporate clients.
