white lines over other colors

Post by Judy on Sat Aug 22, 2009 4:39 pm

Ok... found the self painting rather challenging so decided to give it another go this morning. I ran into the same problem that I have all the time. When I have to paint fine white lines (ie whiskers) over other colors, I always pick up the color underneath and then end up making my lines too wide to try and make the white brighter. All the paint I used was Snazaroo. I just got white Detailz so I thought it might work better, but I got the same result. Everything was dry before I tried the white. I tried using a little round brush and then a flat brush but got the same result. The white looked fine when I tried it on my hand, but it picked up the yellow ochre in the attached picture. Suggestions???

Honestly? Your white looks good to me, but you can use DFX or Wolfe White. They are reputed to go over any color, but if you push real hard, they pick up the color as well. But, they are hands down superior for going over other colors.

I should have some DFX white(with free shipping) back on the shop by mid week.

Judy... It looks great!! There is always a little "transfer" and it is small stuff so don't sweat it.

However, Wolfe and DFX white will work "better" as they tend not to bleed through to the other colour. The higher wax content in them helps to keep their colour holding.

All I could think was WOW when I saw that. Great work! What did you use for the fur effect?

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'll be getting my hands on some white, black and red DFX and Wolfe. Had I done my research better, I would have seen this same subject came up a while ago on this forum. I also checked out Shannon's site for her favourite colors/paint. I ordered some metallic colors based on your suggestions Shannon....thanks.

And colormyworld, I used a rake brush to get the fur effect. First time I used it and I really liked it. I'll definitely be using it again!

Hats off to all of you who do self painting on a regular basis. What a challenge!! You don't have any depth perception when you look in a mirror! lol. I'll keep practicing though....

Try wearing your reading glasses and painting yourself..That is quite a challenge..especially when it's on the side of ones face..omg...

I'm going to have to get one of those brushes! But Judy, I actually have only really practiced on myself, and a few times on my little brother, and once or twice on a roomie...actually found it harder on others than on myself! I'm afraid of that for gigs, but have to start getting some non-self practice!

Oh and do you have a website? I would LOVE to see more of your work because every time I see that avatar I am just floored. Are you actually new to Face Painting (since it's in this section of the forum)? If so double kudos!

Thanks colormyworld.... www.facefx.info.... don't get too excited.. I just started doing this in June!! The book that I used for the lion face is the Wolfe Brothers Wild Faces.... they've got some really great ideas! I'm going to try out some more of their designs.

I will definitely check it out Smile. I just started in June too (well I took a 4 hour workshop in June and actually picked up and starting practicing in July...took me awhile to get motivated!) I only have one book , but I don't like it much...

Good site! I like your butterfly, and the detail on the witch is great. And that child at the end is adorable! I almost made a Vistaprint site, but didn't because the one I just started is free, and has a lot of features (though I don't know how to use half of them, so mine is kinda dull.) Have you done many jobs yet? I can't wait to start! I have one next weekend and am TERRIFIED but so excited!
