Derivan question

Post by clowngirl on Thu Jan 05, 2012 5:27 am

Hi! My problem is I don't have enough black paint to get by until I'm able to order some from a store. I don't know about other stores but my supplier is closed for another two weeks. I usually use Paradise black but it's run out and I've had no choice but to use the Snaz black I have. I'm very annoyed with it. No surprise that it melted, I guess, and it got all over my balloons! I found it very difficult to use today and I was embarrassed, I think I'd have done a much better job with a different black. It's just so gloopy. Since I'm desperate, I'm actually considering using Derivan black as it's the only one I can get my hands on, so yeah, I'm worried! I know it's not great stuff. Does anyone think I'll experience any major problems using it for the time being, it's only because it's an emergency that I'm considering it. I'm also nervous as I'm so used to using cakes. Actually I just remembered I have a Derivan flouro green that I was given and tried it. It goes on SO sheer, it's terrible Sad. Really don't know what to do at this point. Thanks!

Thanks livethedream. My Mum bought me a cake of Monte Marte but doesn't remember where from. I can't find it in my area but may order some online. I may have enough Snaz for one more day but have found it so hard to use that I wonder if Derivan black could be much worse. If it's as bad as the neon green then it's much worse. I have some on my leg now, it's ridiculously sheer and horribly cracked now. I think the only option I'm left with is buy Derivan black or don't paint this weekend! I can't even use my Tag white instead of black for butterflies etc as I haven't gotten the hang of using it yet. I'm still getting used to the consistency. I can use it for dots over black but when I try to use it for line-work over a darker colour it looks bad. I tried to do white stripes on a black tiger today and ended up having to cover the lines in glitter. Very frustrating day!

Do you have any darker colours you can use instead? Like a dark blue?

Yes, I do! Thanks Bekahcat, stupidly I didn't think of that though I'm guessing the dark blue will only work for a few things, like I couldn't use it for spiderman etc. But I guess I could use it instead of black for bats and stuff and to outline a few things so my wonderful (not) Snaz black will last longer

I've seen a few butterflies and eye designs using colours other than black and they look pretty gorgeous. Worth a try until you can pick up a new black. Smile

When you do get to buy a new black, I'd recommend DFX, I love it... Smile Get a lot of it as well, it's one of those colours that you'll get through...

Dear Clowngirl:
I am allergic to Derivan, so my advice is biased.

I agree with using dark blue, in place of black. For Spidey-Guy, I have made his web lines in silver, instead of black, because the boy asked for that.... It looked pretty good, IMO.

To make a white that will endure over a dark line, find the thread for Metina's "Dippy Pots". I have small Dippy Pots of black and white.

What area of our planet do you reside? There is no location on your profile. Maybe if you post your location, you may be able to find face painters close to you, who may be able to help you out. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Is that close to where you are?

WHere are you? I think most suppliers are used to us arty types that run out of stuff and need it yesterday.. and many will express post if you desperately need it. Derivan sux, and smells, I used it once before I started face painting to see if it could be a temporary alternative to henna when people wanted black..only realised i had it when i cleared out my art room. good luck finding something...I'd be calling a supplier and seeing if I could do a pick up??

You're right, Livethedream - my Mum bought me some Derivan black and there's no way I could use it on someone. It's utter crap and it cracks. I really was feeling desperate, haha. Thanks, Bekahcat, I may have to just use my dark blue and it hope it goes okay with my other colours. I'd like to try DFX - is it true that it's exactly the same as Tag but with a different label? I've read that some think it is along with Wolfe while others compare the three. And yes, I'll definitely be stocking up! This really is all my fault. I've been painting every day and should've had more foresight. Thanks, Fesspenter - which silver did you use? I only have Snaz and am guessing it won't be great for that? I do have some silver metallic powder I could mix into it, hmm. I'm from Sydney's South-west, so no, Jolenebox, I don't have access to Hobby lobby, but thanks. Thanks, JBM, I know, I should have been more organised and found someone to express-post it to me in time. I've just been so run off my feet and need to get organised. I actually need it for tomorrow through to Monday as hopefully I can get a shop express-post it to me for use on Tuesday. I'm unable to pick up at this point and hopefully will never be in this bind again! So annoyed with myself for letting this happen. Oh, and yes - the dippy pot seems like a good idea.

You can indeed mix the silver mehron powder with your snaz silver to make it work. I have a bad cake of paradise silver that is useless...but it works when I mix it with the mehron powder. And I've seen Spidey with blue webs...actually looked really cool!
