Need help painting flowers!!!! Any tips!!??

Post by Lady_Frost on Thu Jan 05, 2012 5:57 pm

I'm new to face painting and lately I've been working on Flowers and getting them to look real. I have been working on this for several weeks now and basically at my wits end. I have seen the video Jinny does on roses and I have tried the technique, but for some reason it doesn't work for me. Any other way to do this?

Would help if you'd post a photo of your efforts so we could see the problems. There have been several threads on the subject if you use the search bar on the right.

I feel like such an old timer when I refer someone to the search bar!

I don't know what kind of flowers you're after, but Lisa Joy Young has some great super fast flowers she does by double loading the brush.

I checked the search engine earlier and I guess my computer didn't load the page up right. I will post pics this weekend and show my attempts. BekahCat, I have seen the ones that Lisa makes and I have perfected those. Thanks ^.^

Try this: http://www.tole-expressions.com/tutorials/one_stroke_roses.html
Doesn't include a "U" stroke but hope it helps. Smile

I'll be teaching a floral class at Art of Body Experience next year, so I'll be upping my flowers this year. I did a challenge last year on flowers, but can't seem to find the thread.... I think there was a heated discussion in the middle of it & am hoping it didn't get deleted because of it Sad

Anyway, what I do is google images for paintings of flowers. I'll try pansies, or roses, magnolias, tulips, etc. Whatever you want to work on. Then I'll spend a week or 2 practicing one particular flower till I have it down pretty well, then see how I can incorporate it into a designs.

Here's a few of my flowers

I love Daisies. I think I'm going to try working on those for awhile. Right now I am sooo annoyed with trying to get my roses to look right and hate it with Valentine's coming up. I'll be posting a pic either tonight or tomorrow on my "Roses"

Do a youtube search for Vi from sparkling faces and brkrvail' s challenges for the wonder pallet, they had each did a video on each color combo, and brkravil's(who hhas a terific hello kitty too) has a one stroke rose tutorial that is really good. I had it book marked, but got a new computer, but I will look later.

Hey Rachel!!! Here's my rose step-by-step.

Create the rose shape with paradise dark red.

Draw highlights in with yellow and tap your finger or sponge on the lines while they are still wet to help them from looking too harsh.

Draw in your shadow lines with black.

Use a dry brush and run it across your black paint to pick up some dry pigment. Then use the dry pigment to add shading and make the black line work blend.

It's the brush loading. Your strokes are great. There's just not enough contrast between the white and the red. Try loading your brush with the paint a little less wet, but not so much that the bristle separate. Also, point the white out and the red in. That way the strokes create the natural highlights and low lights of flowers. Don't get discouraged because you're doing all the strokes right, it's just the consistency of the paint that you need to play with a bit.

What do your split cakes look like? You really need a cake w/ very sharp contrast going from white, to pink to red. Paradise has a Prismacake that has the perfect rose colors on one side & the best green for leaves on the other side. Metina sells it in the forum shop & it lasts a long time because of it's larger size.

There are a lot of flowers in this thread. I'm not sure this is the one Linda meant? I think she meant another one, but I can't find that one either.

There are beautiful flowers in this thread however.

Re: Need help painting flowers!!!! Any tips!!??

Lady_Frost. I found a consistent way to get the right amount of water in my brush for one-stroke. Dip the bristles in the water all the way. Wipe them firmly (not hard) against the sides of your water supply (I have a square water bath that works really well) it shouldn't drip. Load the brush back and forth. If there is water pooling at the edges immediately stop and dump it out and resume.

Keep loading until there is a drag on the brush. This should be loaded enough to get the 5 petals out of the paint. Make a plumeria/frangipani base flower shape (there are several tutorials on youtube, including mine under Painted Party) and then you are going to want to reload.

Now touch the TIPS of your bristles in the water. You are only picking up enough water to reactivate your brush and refresh the colors. Now you will do your arch and U shapes. The side petals are a little tricky but line up your brush with the side of the tube you just made and swoop the top out and "draw" the C shape and then cut in. It looks in your picture like you are starting your side petals like you would to make a flower. They are actually parallel to the "u" tube and are just little ears...not a full petal.

Like someone else said, your shapes are pretty good but the water control is making all of your colors run together. Here's a good tutorial on loading but I DON'T touch my bristles on the water that long and I wipe the brush on the side to get rid of excess water instead of tap on a towel. The ferrel spray is a good tip, but it's a little time-wasty for me.

The water control is much better and the petal with the star at the top is perfect but there are too many petals now. Make your flower background like the top middle on your waxed paper and then add your new center starting close to the top petal. Then add the two petals on the right of your new flower and mirror those petals on the left and you'll have a perfect rose. Your leaves look great...maybe just a little wiggle at the beginning.

SOOOO close!
