Specific Tiger Colors

Post by Flying Laughter on Fri Jan 06, 2012 9:59 pm

I am working on my tiger and find that my DFX orange and yellow just seem to bright or crayola-y and not as tigery as I would like them to look. In particular the orange just is too orange. I want to get a rainbow cake that will give a nice blended effect from lightest to darkest for tigers.
What are the standard colors (specific brand and color name) for tigers?
What would you recommend for a less orangey tiger (again specific brand and color name)?
What rainbow cake would you recommend?

For a less bright yellow, I like Kryolan #302. For a less orange-y orange Kryolan #508. As for a split cake, I have a friend who has a Face Magic Fantasia SillyFarm rainbow cake and I really liked it.

Good colors for tiger cakes

Post by Denise Cold on Fri Jan 06, 2012 11:40 pm

These two are TAG pearl gold/copper split cake one with DFX white & the other TAG pearl white:

This is the TAG pearl yellow/orange split with pearl white: (haven't used this too much but I do like it!)

These two are regular TAG colors in yellow/golden orange/orange/red (homemade cake): (I think it was Michelle Heffner that used the red and I loved it...the cake is almost empty on the yellow side, used alot.)

This is a TAG orange/yellow split with DFX white:

My current opinion is that it's more versatile to have two color splits that you can use for masks and butterflies then add the white (or other color) that you think is more appropriate. I bought a big Pearl White because I was using the lightest color of a tiger cake a lot to fill in the middle...so after doing Christina Davison's tiger where she does a white base and then sponges color on the outside, I decided to buy the pearl yellow/orange split. So far I've really liked this method.

Sorry...that was a really long answer to your question.

Thanks Denise!
I don't see the tag copper/gold split cake in the forums store.

Where can I find it?

I used snaz yellow and orange for the base to create this tiger look:

If you are looking to create a more realistic tiger then I would not recommend a rainbow cake at all. Real tigers are more of a burnt orange. But for the fantasy tiger effect that most kids want you can really use just about any combo of colors or rainbow cake...

Miss Ronnie is right. That's what I mean about split cakes. I've done green/light green tigers, purple/lilac tigers and I've seen about every color done by other painters.

I probably made my own copper/gold split. Early on when I joined the forum, it was suggested to me to split my cakes to make more room in my kit. Got me a little addicted and I make splits and my own one-stroke cakes a lot.

I'll have to clean up my kit and take a picture this weekend.

Love your pearl yellow/orange split, Denise! And for anyone wondering.... if you just want to do a quick & easy tiger mask... nothing is faster then using the white & orange Starblends... wish i could show you how fast with a video...
Very Happy

I use a metallic gold, metallic orange & a copper most times. I use any brand from TAG Pearl colors, to DFX/Wolfe Metallics to Paradise Metallics.

Here's some pics of my tigers, jaguars, cheetahs & lions (I know my eyes look a bit weak on the kids, but I don't like painting w/ a brush on kids eyes... especially w/ black).

I would laugh if a kid said to me "This tiger isnt REALISTIC enough"... I think of the wolfe brothers said it best in one of their videos... "It's just face painting... what do they want for five bucks?"

@Linda, all those cats are crazy awesome!

@Miss Ronnie, you can make videos with a 10 dollar webcam and not worry about saving for a video camera. The digital camera you use makes videos also.
