Paints around eyes

Post by Rampant on Wed Jan 25, 2012 11:34 am

So, normally I do body painting, and only recently have I actually been asked to do a face. The design is pretty simple, but I wonder if there are any restrictions with regards to eye/lips and the paint? I use DFX/wolfe/kryolan/paradise right now. Are there any paints that I can't put on the eyelids/around the eyes?

Also, how can I make this stuff as sweat resistant as possible? This is for a show. Or should I get some powders or something? (I've never used anything other than the paint).

I try to stick to snazaroo or starblend or mica (powders) around the eyes as much as possible. That said however, for my current avatar I did use TAG split cake for the flames and it washed off fine. (I put white starblends all over as my base first - including my eyes.)

Starblends do well in heat - maybe have powders as a base and use the 'real' paints for detail work for the most part. You can use a fixative to seal makeup or if it's for a theatrical show you could go with grease paints and use loose powder to go over the paints.

can you use water based paint over grease based paints? I've never used powders at all... how are they used?

I think this may be rare, as people use them often, but neons burn my eyes. Well, the Tag neon rainbow did, so I avoid them.

I've heard that you should avoid neons around eyes, but other than that... I avoid black because boys don't want to look like they have eyeliner once they've washed it off...

I believe the neons and some of the blue and reds are not intended for the eyes or mouth, but I think it's because of the sensitivity in those areas. If they are sensitive then you should avoid these areas, but I usually just go with it Wink

See I'm just too worried that a kid could have the same reaction I do, it's quite painful so as nice as noen butterflys look, I just can't bring myself to do it.

You can apply a white base first then apply the neon over it Wink

you can't really mix grease makeup with water based.... Grease will last better if they REALLY sweat, but depending on the person, they might be ok with water based. Water based is definitely easier and goes on and off faster. Grease/Cream makeup is harder to apply, takes longer to put on, is much more expensive, etc... but you can jump in the pool with it on once it's set.

Maybe if you give us an idea of what the face is we can give you some ideas of what to use. They make theatrical makeup specifically to hold up to the sweat and heat (and to show well under lights). If it's for a show, I would go with Ben Nye theatrical makeup or Mehron. Water based paints are for facepainting children... not for holding up to actual performance.

I haven't had any bad experiences with certain face paints around eyes, but I do have a reaction to paint on my lips. Whenever I have paint on my lips (regardless of colour), my lips go numb after only like 5 minutes or so of having it on. I noticed it the most with dark blue Wolfe on my lips. My lips were numb for hours.

I recently bought a lipstick palette so I'll only be using those on lips in the future!
