AT LEAST $100 ... 4 hours of JUST face painting or balloons at a charity rate for me is $189 (that's 30% off of my usual hourly which has a discount over 2 hours already).... up to you how much you love this charity, how much you spend on your prizes and how much you need to monitor the games besides face painting.

you are very welcome!! I've been in the position before and I know that everyone says that it's better to do even if you don't get paid, but it just invites more of the same and you've got better things to do than work for free. Your business will grow with each passing year and pretty soon you won't even blink at this kind of thing.

They expected you to paint and entertain for free? You absolutely made the right choice turning it down. If your name got out there associated with free, voluntary services you'd never make any money!

Good luck with future events though!

Good choice, Tull, to say "no." Often we feel like if we say "no" to something, then we are "losing out." But in truth, when you say a legitimate "no," it's like sweeping clutter off your path. Then, the next (and better) opportunity can find its way more easily to you.

It takes a bit of bravery and faith. And, it's SOOOOOOO worth it. And so much FUN once you begin to live like this more and more, because it really opens your eyes to your self worth and all the magic that's really out there.

Best of luck in your face painting journey!!

Joan

They don't want to pay your fee, they won't let you have a tip jar, and they won't cover even the basic cost of materials? I would have RAN in the opposite direction!

I've painted at a number of venues where the non-profit covers my basic materials (charity rate) and then I put out a tip jar. I then MAKE SURE to have a sign saying that today's face painting has been sponsored by the public by the not-for-profit.

Or...like Perry said, I'm happy to do a ppf and give a fee back to the non-profit.

I'm not happy to get walked on by people. The ONE time I agreed to do an event for free, the organizer called me up a few days before the event and asked me to donate a painted glass vase to the raffle door prize. I've donated things for raffles WHEN I'M BEING PAID and it's typically something like 50% off your child's birthday party, or a free bling upgrade to your next miniparty. I don't raffle off glassware and definately not when I'm already a freebie. I told the woman that "I think I'm donating enough, thank you" and she said something along the lines of: "It's my job to make sure that I take advantage of as many free things as possible. Once I hear I can get one thing for free, I know that I can keep trying."

After I heard that, I said NEVER AGAIN!

i say if its a event that is promising good numbers and can prove it ( have been told there will be alot then i sit there and no kidds around) i tell them i will charge per face then donate 20% of what i made that way we both make something

if you do a free event let me tell you they will tell others then all you get in calls saying you did it for free for them
