I think I've gone overboard...

Post by Lady Jayde on Mon Aug 31, 2009 9:03 am

I'm an avid crafter. I love anything that represents artistic expression. The problem is that when I get a pitbull grip on an artform, I lose touch with all reason and go for broke. As our favorite pop tart has sung, "oops, I did it again!"

There's no doubt in my mind that I've had more fun acquiring much of the cool paint pots that have been given high praise here than anything else. I do paint something every night and I've already lined up a few events... in late September. Last night my husband was looking at my stuff (as I was trying to get it all squished in one rolling bag and told me that I look like a professional, but when am I going to have time to use all I've acquired. That was an eye opening moment for me!

I am one of those people who can't truly be happy as long as there's something out there that I want (craft-wise), can get, but haven't gotten yet. I know that I've aquired far more than I'd need to get started but I'm having a hardtime getting that little remorse mechanism to activate. Is it normal for painters to become fascinated with supplies once they realize what is available to them? I won't list what I've indulged on for fear of sounding like I'm tooting my own horn, but I can say that I have a little of everything and a lot of somethings. Am I normal? And...how do I stop myself? I've been having naughty thoughts about Mozart Pink...and I haven't even gotten the bronze and silver (silber) I ordered yet!

Don't catch up Renee! It will never happen! Lol!

That was the first thing that popped in my mind..."I have to catch up!" and then I went and reread my OP and remembered why I posted in the first place.

ahem...

Thank you Shannon for ... uh... putting things in their... uh... proper? perspective? lol!

Though I could do with a bit more glitter, and maybe I COULD use those empty palettes...and it wouldn't hurt to have a couple more AquaColor pots... and maybe...

The "pizza" shaped container is feathers... rarely used, but in the past at some princess parties the feather and sticky jewels are attached to the foreheads for crowns and masks... with eyelash glue. I don't use it at public gigs, only princess parties.

That photo shows ONE Fardel Pump... I have about 20 now... plus dozens of bottles of Fardel... hundreds of glitter tatt stencils...

The drawers to the left side (which are cut off) are stockpiles of Snaz and Kryolan - I now have more of those drawers full of Kryolan, Funky Foxes and Wolfe...

And you know what... I've been on a self-imposed moratorium on "new" purchases for over three years (my spending was more than my profit before that!)... Anything I've acquired has been through barter and trade (with a couple of notable exceptions - Bach Blue stock-up and a few misc purchases)

It happens to all of us. After painting for about 2 years, I saw things just stacking up and others just not being used at all and I started trading. This is one of the biggest reasons for my adding the Face Paint Swap Shop.

If I don't use something, I will trade it for cash or something else that I want to try. I have gotten some really yummy stuff like the IF Pallette, huge tub of irr yellow glitter and more.

Just think of what you need and what you can trade and post away.

Oh, and Shannon? I'm going to show my hubby your picture tonight and suggest (nicely) that he put a big sock in his kisser the next time he complains about a shipment of paints...

You timing couldn't be better as I'm expecting 4 shipments this week, lol!

Ahahaha I LOVE IT!!! I'm the same. I got a 4lb shipment of glitter last month, (among many, many other things) and when I mentioned buying more stuff, my best friend nearly went ballistic on me, hahaha.

Now I don't feel so bad about wanting to buy more stuff right now...let's not mention my stockpile!

Shannon still wins, though.

HAHAHAHAHA I LUV IT!

I'm a little different, I to have a huge supply, but i am very meticulous in what I order. I make sure i order what I need and not always what I want. Wink Every event is a little different, so the needs change, but this is the ONLY way I can control my spending. LOL

Hey! I ONLY order what I need... I do a lot of theatre and we use face paints on many shows. Last show, I went through 5 Grimas pearl silvers alone and a ton of glitter (A Midsummer Night's Dream) and on the show before that (The Jungle Book) we used up every white, brown and grey I had in stock and I had to shriek for help and get more sent out.

Can I help it if I over order???? Buying for shows is a billable expense so they are not "purchases" for me you see.... Wink

How timely. I was beginning to think I had a problem. Laughing

I did the same thing... waiting for an order and already getting ready to place another one. I am on a first name basis with the UPS man. No joke. He has even made friends with my german shepherd.

Shannon, I could see how you could possibly be completely innocent in this...

If perhaps I had cataracts thick as space station glass...

BUT, since I'm not that fortunate, I'm going to say that you have a little stuff love as well as professional motivations... How could you be a Kick A%^& face painter and not have it?

It's okay, I love my precious too... Razz Golem! Golem!

Here is my SMALL kit that I bring with me everywhere.. Sometimes I don't have room for it all so I just bust out one palette, glitter and couple of brushes and 3 sponges... but most of the time, it's actually this jam packed with fun!

You mean the drive to get more 'stuff' doesn't stop once you have a bit of experience behind you??? Oh great. I thought it may wear off in a year or so..... might as well start planning for an addition on the house now! scratch

Re: I think I've gone overboard...

I have my office (used to be the third bedroom upstairs) that is ALL make-up related. I have two dressers and a shelf of bins in the garage for storage of make-up related items. I have a studio in the basement with shelving/dresser and storage with a complete kit permanently set-up for painting with backdrop and lighting for photography, AND the basement store room has my larger items (large display unit, signage, old rejected kit boxes, large trunks of costumes and props, stools and airbrush rig)...

Better start building that addition... I mean, if you have kids, they'll need to live somewhere. Laughing
