Extra booth space a winning or losing proposition....

Post by Denise Cold on Tue Jan 31, 2012 3:02 pm

I'm thinking of asking for an extra booth space for a fair where we had long lines for a large part of the day. Is that dumb? Basically I would be renting booth space for people to sit and wait and have shade and give us a little extra room in our tent. So the extra expenses would be the space ($100 for two days) a canopy of some sort ($60 to $100) and probably a fan ($25). I think I could borrow enough chairs.

The advantages would be the Disneyland effect...people are more likely to wait and not walk off if there is somewhere to wait. It would give us more room in our tent to paint. We would get more families or maybe be able to get other members of the family painted and we'd have a bigger impression at the fair.

Downside would be 10% - 20% profit loss. Actually longer waits because the line would stay longer. Non-customers using the space for shade. Could be bad weather and now I've lost even more money.

Has anyone done an extra booth and what was your experience with it?

Hi Denise,

Thanks for sharing. Your idea is not dumb we all suffer from crowding families and unorganized lines. Yet, I don't think a "waiting room" would help. I personally can barely afford the vendor fees for one booth. You would probably need someone to control the area and unwanted guests. I would not rent the space. Instead I would use the money for the extra space and pay a family member to control the line, hand out stickers for waiting with your logo. Maybe you could invest the money in a misting device instead of the fan.

I agree with Vivid Face Art, in theory it's a great idea for the reasons you mentioned... But I don't think it would be worth it, you'd probably be having to deal with unwanted non-customers... And it's quite a big expense for a waiting room...

I agree, unless they are willing to give it to you at half price and only if you could use that second canopy for lots of other things. I agree that the money would be better invested in a line manager/money taker type person.

My husband did a great job being line manager but we were butt to butt in the tent and had a problem with kids getting between Emma and myself trying to look at the paints (and parents trying to take pictures...gonna do something about that too.) Maybe I just need to look at our configuration. Hubby was thinking about using duct tape to make a "safe zone" around us. I will do the big mirror thing too...that will help a lot with the speed of the line.

Thanks for the feedback. I wanted to get the application in today.

pictures and waiting people need to be outside the tent... only the painter and the paintee need to be in there. Especially at festivals that I do with another painter, there is room for just us and no one else in there.

At the fair we're talking about there was only about 15 feet between us and the booth directly across...kind of an alleyway so they start lining up blocking the booth next to us. Maybe I could request an end cap of sorts so the line could go out into empty space at least.

I'm only requesting one booth and then I'll be looking through everyone's tent set ups for ideas.

I have had that situation where people for my line are blocking the other booths. It is not unusual to have an hour or more wait to get painted.

For one festival, the next year they put me on the end so that customers would have more waiting room and not impede flow of traffic for other booths. I would certainly ask for that.

Good. I'm glad it's not a "diva" type request. Seems like a good idea especially if they put me on the east facing side so the west sun would be blocked.
