When you mix the henna powder with lemon juice it helps to release the dye from the henna so that you it stains...

Well, I'd used lime juice instead.

It worked Smile I figured it would... it's just the acid factor that causes the chemical reaction so thought it would but last night I wasn't sure if it was going to work. I've woken up though with a very stained hand!

many people have experimented with dried limes then boiled in tea. Alot of work for the same results. lemon juice is best but lime will also work. Technically orange works as well, but the thickness of the juice and the sugars make it not quite acidic enough. Glad you liked the results!

Henna releases dye well at PH 5.5 which is sour (not uber sour , but sour)
Sour stuff breaks down cellulose dye is released. Other things work, but they must be acidic and preferably natural. There is more science here about the hennotannic acids, etc. but letís just go with natural sour helps release the dye that binds with your skin to make the stain. So Lemon, lime, grapefruit all work. The general consensus amongst the majority of henna geeks is that lemon is the bet. Some prefer others. Tea has a bit of a bitter/sour, but really is not necessary in any mix. I get the below results with good quality BAQ henna, lemon juice, table sugar and good quality essential oils.

If you have FABAtv, I talk about some of this in my vids. If not, alot of FAQ questions are on my webpage! Hope that answers some of your questions!! Very Happy

A friend of mine got a horrible bubbling oozing burn from the reaction of lime juice on her hands (from making drinks) and sunlight. She had to be hospitalized. Apparently this is common and very serious. Just thought I'd mention it.
