Tag Purple too dark?

Post by erica21 on Sun Feb 05, 2012 7:27 am

Hi all, as a newbie I thought it was me but now I received my DFX palette from Metina Very Happy I have compared the DFX purple to the tag and well - the tag purple is too dark! I need to use up what I have and do have some ideas on how to lighten it but what would be easiest? Sponge on white first - does work but as a new sponger it is a bit of a pain - and I can forsee me forgetting with nerves! I could swipe in white first or I thought that I could mix lilac into the purple and repot? Whatcha think - please???

Why use your lilac? Just mix a little white into it and it will "lighten".

Please never feel bad about being new. I only started last year. Tip on mixing...I start with small portions to check if it's gonna be what I want before committing to the whole cake. Add your secondary color in small bits as well. You can always add more white but you can't pull it out once it's in there. I've done both of these methods and find that either works. ONE--take an paint container (you can take your purple from it's home) cut your colors into slivers and mix with enough water so you get like cake batter consistency and stir, stir, stir then let them sit out to dry for a couple days.
TWO--put your colors in the microwave for a few seconds (like five) till they are soft and then smoosh them together until you can't tell that you had two colors to start.
I tend to do the first method if my paints are hard or crumbly and the second method if they are more like play dough.
Hope that helps.

Oh yes - thank you that helps a lot. It is so hot and humid here that my paints are more like play dough so I will smoosh them together - but great tip about small amounts - I hate to think what I would have done to my paints if you hadnt told me that! I could have ended up with a lot more lilac!!! Thank you Martha you are really kind. Very Happy

You could also cut the cake. Put a stripe of white in the middle or half the cake and when you use the cake, use a circular motion to mix the colors on the sponge or brush to your likeing. This way you can still have it dark'er' or lighter. A split cake may serve you well but just don't make it a full half if you only want it a 'bit' lighter. That works for me, but mixing it into a permantent color you like def. has it's advantages as well!

Thanks for that Kim! Smile

The purple is in a 2 colour split with lilac and I just want to lighten up the purple side as it looks awful on the face - I've been avoiding it for ages thinking it was me as i had seen a Lisa Joy Young tutorial on youtube using a pink and purple split which was beautiful - but it was DFX.

I can't actually take my eyes off your avatar - that phoenix - I just saw it in your post and it's amazing! Seriously WOW!

Another option if you have a color or brand of paint you aren't really feeling is to swap or sell it on the Face Paint Forum Swap Shop.

If you are looking for a color of face paint that you don't have, you can always mix them. The mix just like paint. I do it all the time for small stuff. You can also mash colors together to make new colors or mash white w/ a color to lighten it. You just mush & mash till all the streaks are out of it.

I have this thing, I can't throw away or otherwise get rid of a paint... Even if I don't like it... I'm convinced that the moment I do so I'll find some reason that I need it!

You could just leave it in the split... Or stick it on the swap shop, I'm sure someone would want it! Do you have a photograph?

Hi! I can't thank you all enough for the advice Very Happy and for not making me feel like a twit about the not knowing about the mixing thing! Embarassed Well the update is - I did it - smooshed the tag purple with lilac (dont have much white at the moment but have an extra lilac) and I love the results! Beautiful colour! It's just needing to dry out a little and will be perfect!
