I didn't know what to do...

Post by Kumi's Magical Brush on Tue Feb 14, 2012 1:07 am

Last Sunday I went a boy's 1st birthday party for face painting. She booked me for 1 hour but only 2 girls were there (the other people didn't show up yet No ) I asked their parents if they wanted a painting or glitter tattoo but no one wanted to do it pale I usually charge $75 for the first hour but I charged $50 instead. I still feel bad I charged $50 for only 2 cheek arts confused Has anyone experienced something like this and how did you charge them?

Yes, actually... sorta. It was several years ago, I was about 14 I think... My mom and I were booked for 2 hours at a family reunion, but there ended up being only 5 kids there, 2 teens, and the rest all adults. We were in clown costume, so 2 of the kids didn't want to come anywhere near us, and of course, the teen thought they were way too cool to have clowns paint them.

So there we are 15 minutes into the gig and all the kids that want painting are already painted.... and we don't know what elst to do. So, my mom offers painting to the adults... bad idea, as most were already quite... erm... toasted, at that point.

Anyway, we paint them for about an hour and 15 minutes (having to decline many requests as they involved R and X rated subjects, which I, being a sheltered child had NO idea how to paint, let alone even know what such things looked like or even were) and then just packed up early and didn't charge for more than an hour, the gig was a bit of a bust.

Some times it just happens.

Well... the way I look at it is, you have been hired/contracted to provide service for a set time frame. The fact that they haven't produced the number they expected is NOT my problem so charging them less than agreed to is not something I would do.

I have been hired for my minimum two hours for a birthday that had 5 (five) kids... I painted them, their siblings (teens), the moms, then everyone got glitter tatts, some more than one. Everyone was happy.

They signed the contract for the time/rate and would have payment ready, so I don't stress over it.

If you go to a restuarant and order meals for your kids who won't eat it... does the restaurant reduce the price because they didn't eat the food on the plate?

I'm w/ Shannon. I used to fell bad when this would happen & have found some solutions to help prevent it from happening... but it does occasionally still happen.
I tell the client to have me show up 30 minutes to 1 hour after the start of the party, so they're not paying for me to do nothing. It's in my contract that they are paying for my time, not just my services. It's the clients responsibility to make sure guests arrive. Often, they forget to send out invites & so no one comes. I will paint slowly & w/ more detail, paint the adults, etc. to help fill up the time. If the guests come late, the client can pay to have me stay longer (if I'm not booked after them). As bad as I feel... feeling bad doesn't pay bills...

I think it all has a way of balancing out.... Sometimes you have stressful parties that make you feel you should have doubled your rate for and then there's other times where you only paint a couple of faces and then sit there twittling your thumbs....

By the way, the two that you did were wonderfully cute!!!!

This last big party I booked I suggested that I come a 1/2 hour into the party because that happened to me...not as badly though...at another large party.

You did what you could, you gave her a discount. Like Shannon said, you can't control the attendance.

I don't think I could bring myself to charge full price... The parents must be feeling bad enough that the other kids didn't turn up...

I had that twice this weekend. One party that was supposed to be 10 kids (2 hrs fp and balloons) but 4 kids and the mom were out sick. So we did deluxe fp and crazy cool balloons. the other was supposed to be 10 and again, had 6. So all the moms got balloons and some got painted.

I did have a brief moment that first party that I felt bad for charging full price - but Business Kristal socked Softy Kristal and remembered that this is business and they booked my time. I did fill it, which is why I'm glad most of my parties are fp and bt and not just fp.

I have had a call 5 mins before I arrived to tell me that no kids had shown up to the party.
I felt so bad for the birthday kid... I just told them don't worry about it and turned around and went home.
I couldn't imagine anything worse - my daughter went to one recently where she was the ONLY one that showed up.
I think you did the right thing, for what its worth.

It's so hard when we feel sorry for them and want to adjust accordingly. But at the end of the day, it's not our problem, and we can't lose out because the party didn't work out.

I had one where it was a shamozzle from the start and the mum was sooo disorganised and for months kept asking about it. I answered all of her questions repeatedly but didn't even bother to hope it turned into a gig. Lo and behold she paid the deposit and I was booked.

I got there, and no kids had arrived at all, so then I set up and started to paint the birthday girl and her brother and cousin, and then 2 little girls came who were sisters and that was it. She had booked me for 2 hours, but after the hour, I just said I am happy to leave after one and not charge her. Only because I was soooo bored and the kids didn't want any more painting- just games.

But I still charged her the full amount for the hour for 5 kids. She told me she handed out the invitations on the last day of school for a 2 week break, and it was the last weekend of the holidays, so no kids to talk about it and remind them. Sad, but the mum was just chaotic.

Shannon, this example really helped me understand!

I would have totally done what you did... you never know what showing a little grace will do. The hostess will appreciate what you have done and will be more likely to hire you again or recommend you to others.

I'm with Shannon and Psalmbook you were booked and contracted to be there for a specific amount of time and painting, if you were the one cancelling I could see you not charging but you have to look out for your business. In my real job we have a 2 hr min so if the job takes 2 hours or 5 mins it is the same rate and I don't feel bad because I do show up ready to work the full time.

Magic and Balloons would be super helpful to know and I imagine it would come in handy in a pinch Very Happy

We had a similar situation happen to us. There were 10 children total and we were hired for one hour. Being that there was two of us and we are fast painters, we had everyone done with intricate designs in the first 10 minutes. So we stood around awkwardly for a few minutes until an adult sat in the chair. She then egged on the rest to get painted until every face in the house had something on it. It worked out great and they loved the jokes and attention they got from each other.

LOL! I did a party the other day where my 2hrs had exprired and low and behold a mum turned up late (with her 6 kids!) but i had started packing up and everyone that i had painted was very happy.
Lisa Joy Young said on one of her youtube videos that you should have a few different versions of the same design ie fast, medium and detailed. This way if things are a bit slow you can take more time to do an extra fantastic design per person, or if there's more than you expected you can still get through without rushing
