@Vegas Mom - the denser makeup sponges are best for oil or creme-based makeup. They suck up a LOT of water-based paint and don't disperse it as easily as the tack sponges do. That said, some people use them and love them. Try them out and see how they work for you - they're all pretty cheap so it wouldn't be a huge investment to try different types before you commit to buying more or buying in bulk.

I've been living in Portland since about 2000 but I'm from Miami, FL. There's some others on here from Salem, Eugene, and Grant's Pass, too. =)

Re: Sponges from Amazon.com

I have no idea how many sponges I have... I count by the bucket. I use ice cream buckets and just fill them up. One bucket is usually good for up to 3-4 hours. I'll take two for 5 hours +. I also have two of those square fabric drawer/bins full of new sponges that are not yet in circulation.

I think I've only lost or thrown out about 5 half sponges in 10 years.

I use once, then into the used bucket to be washed at home.

I love mine - I donated about 10 of them to the school (so 20 halves) and have 15 in my kit (cut into 30). So, I still have 75 that I haven't even "de-smooshed!"

When they came all smooshed and misshapen, I gave them their warm bath and left them on the counter to air dry.
Hubby came home an started launching them at the daughter and her sleepover friends. So now they are awesome wet projectiles, and I am a fun mom.

Older post but just curious how these sponges are holding up???? Mine from Michaels are not doing so well...They are fraying where they've been cut. (only 2-3 uses).

So far they hold up beautifully. I even bought another double order last month
(I have a ton of festivals this summer.)

I highly recommend the Purity soap to clean them... it is the best thing I have found so far to get as much pigment out of the sponges as possible. I even used it directly on the daycare kids' faces to remove their paint.

I use Ivory soap and they do pretty well. I toss them in a bucket of water after I use them, and they clean up pretty well. I neglected washing a couple out and they are stained red, by otherwise, no problems at all. Mine are more firm than Fantasy sponges and I do prefer the Fantasy ones, bu I don't have many of them, so these are my second choice.

I was able to find some snaz ones on sale a while back and am liking them a lot more than michaels. They seem to hold up, more dense and hold the paint better. Would like to hear more about the foam padding someone used here too.

i have the green ones too..I like both of them...the ones I orderd from ebay are more dense like the white snazaroo,,but I like the green ones too,,they are really soft...so I gues I like both..I also bought some tack sponges off amazon..they are similar to the one's that the wolf brothers use...but they are a little stiffer..I like them as well..it depends on where im using them..if its an eye design I like using the green ones, and the white ones from ebay..if im doing something that needs a texture type look..I like the ones I got from amazon...the tack one...

The sponges I have do hold up extremely well.
When I am at an event, they are the ones I always pick out of my sponge bag first.

But, I think it's best to try a variety and see which you prefer. The firmness factor is all a matter of taste.

I love the green Fantasy sponges that Metina sells on the FacePaintForumShop.

During a festival, I have a "pop-up" camping bucket half filled with water and some Purity soap. (Thank you, Shannon Fennell). At the end of the event, my line manager puts all the sponges in a lingerie bag. At home, the lingerie bag goes in the wash. The sponges come out spotless.
